Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been utilized to help illnesses for over 2,000 years, and many of its core philosophies are still being used to this day. Traditional Chinese Medicine is composed of Acupuncture, Cupping, and Herbal medicine. With these techniques combined it uses a holistic approach to bring the body into balance by healing the root of the illness. Acupuncture or TCM treats the mind, body, spirit, of an individual as a whole.
Though it is common place in the east to be using acupuncture alongside western medicine, it is becoming more practical here in North America. Some studies show that acupuncture can have effects on our nervous and immune systems, as well as hormone levels. Acupuncture/TCM uses the theory of yin yang and meridians to bring balance and regulate qi and blood, which can relax muscles, and aid in organ function.
During Initial treatment the practitioner will take a medical history to narrow down the issue that is causing the illness or pain. These questions range from body pain, diet, sleep, energy, looking at the tongue and pulse, etc. After the intake the practitioner creates a treatment plan specifically tailored to the patient.
The acupuncturist chooses specific points for the treatment using single use disposable needles. It is typically painless, however sensations of tingling, heaviness and electrical sensations can occur though they typically subside within a few moments. The needles can be left in for 15-30 minutes
In addition to acupuncture
Herbal Therapy: Using the medicinal and pharmacological functions of herbs to help the process of healing internally. It is very useful to help treat pain, PMS, difficulty sleeping, issues with digestion, migraines, etc.
Electro-acupuncture: This emits a frequency between two acupuncture points. This stimulation can help amplify the point’s function. This form of acupuncture is especially useful when it comes to sports injuries and chronic pain because it increases local circulation.
Cupping: Uses a small flame to create negative pressure in a glass cup to create suction when applying them to the skin. Placing them on acupuncture points of the back to stimulate qi and blood flow removing blockages and therefore, pain. Cups can be left on from anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Cupping does leave temporary bruises due to the fact that it brings blood to the surface. These bruises are in a circular shape and can range from red to purple, they usually last 3-7 days and are not painful.
